Mobile deposit scams: what to watch for

Mobile check deposit is convenient, but scammers often use it to trick customers into depositing fake or altered checks. Knowing those red flags can help you avoid financial losses.

Common Mobile Deposit Scam Red Flags

1. You are asked to deposit a check and send money back: scammers may send a check and ask you to return a part of the funds for fees, equipment, or overpayment. If the check is fake, you are responsible for the money you sent.

2. Unexpected payments from unknown senders: be cautious if you receive a check from someone you don't know or weren't expecting (especially a large amount).

3. Urgent instructions: pressure to "deposit today" or "send funds immediately" is a common scam tactic.

4. Check from fake jobs or rental offers: scammers often use fake job offers, scholarships, or rental refunds to convince you to deposit a check.

5. Poor quality or altered checks: look for mismatched fonts, blurry images, or signs of editing before depositing.

Important: funds may appear in your account before the check is fully verified. If the check is returned as fraudulent, the money will be removed and you may be responsible for any funds you sent.

What to Do:

1. Do not deposit suspicious checks.

2. Do not send money to the sender.
